The raw materials used in the production of common abrasives include silicon carbide, aluminium oxide, diamond and others. The hardness and abrasive properties of different abrasives vary, and the most suitable abrasives can be selected according to the intended use of the sandpaper. For instance, silicon carbide abrasive is well-suited for sanding hard materials such as metal and stone, while aluminium oxide abrasive is commonly used for sanding relatively soft materials such as wood and plastics. Diamond abrasive boasts extremely high hardness and grinding efficiency, making it ideal for grinding materials with very high hardness requirements.
The substrate of sandpaper can be paper, cloth or a composite material. Paper is a cost-effective option that can meet some strength requirements. Cloth is a high-strength, durable material commonly used for high-intensity grinding. Composite substrates combine the advantages of paper and cloth, offering flexibility and strength.

Wood sanding is a process used to smooth the surface of wood.
- Shaping: sandpaper is used to shape wood, for example in the production of wood carving, to sand out curves and details of the part.
Metalworking Industry:
- Rust Removal: This process is designed to remove rust from metal surfaces, restoring the lustre of the metal in the process.
- Surface Polishing: By selecting the appropriate thickness of sandpaper, the metal surface can be polished to a high standard, resulting in a superior finish.
- Deburring: Metal parts may exhibit burrs following cutting, drilling and other processing. Sandpaper can be used to remove these burrs, ensuring the edges of the parts are smooth.
Car Repair and Maintenance:
- Paint Repair: In the case of minor scratches, sandpaper can be used to sand down the affected area and then touch up the paint. It is recommended that finer sandpaper (e.g. 1500 - 2000 mesh) be used initially to sand around the scratches, in order to achieve a more natural effect when refinishing the paintwork.
- Part sanding: Following the replacement or repair of car parts, it is essential to sand their surfaces, such as brake discs and wheels, to guarantee their flatness and finish.
